Lubrication Technician in a Wallboard Manufacturing Facility (Safety-Sensitive Job Duties)
JOB SUMMARY
The Lubrication Technician is responsible for maintaining the health and efficiency of plant machinery by performing lubrication tasks, inspections, and preventive maintenance on various equipment used in the manufacturing process. This position ensures that machinery operates smoothly, minimizes wear, and reduces the risk of breakdowns by applying the correct types and amounts of lubricants in a timely and safe manner. The technician will work closely with the maintenance team and report directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Routine Lubrication:
Apply lubricants (oil, grease, etc.) to bearings, gearboxes, conveyors, and other mechanical components according to the manufacturer's recommendations and established lubrication schedules.
Lubrication System Maintenance:
Monitor and maintain centralized lubrication systems, ensuring proper operation and flow of lubricants to key equipment. Clean, adjust, or replace components like pumps, filters, and lines as necessary.
Preventive Maintenance:
Conduct regular inspections of equipment to ensure adequate lubrication levels, identify signs of wear, overheating, or contamination, and take appropriate action to resolve potential issues before failure occurs.
Oil Sampling and Analysis:
Collect oil samples for analysis to monitor equipment health and detect signs of contamination or breakdown of lubricants. Interpret results to recommend maintenance actions or changes in lubrication routines.
Troubleshooting:
Assist in diagnosing equipment malfunctions related to lubrication, such as improper oil viscosity, grease contamination, or bearing failures, and collaborate with the maintenance team to resolve these issues.
Lubricant Selection and Application:
Ensure proper selection, handling, and application of lubricants based on machinery specifications, operational conditions, and temperature. Maintain a stock of lubricants and manage inventory to ensure availability.
Filtration and Contamination Control:
Replace oil filters, inspect seals, and implement contamination control practices. Maintain cleanliness of lubrication systems and ensure that lubricants remain free from water, dust, or other contaminants.
Record Keeping:
Maintain detailed logs of all lubrication activities, inspections, and findings. Document the types of lubricants used, quantities applied, and any corrective actions taken during maintenance tasks.
Collaboration:
Work closely with maintenance mechanics, engineers, and operations staff to support plant-wide preventive maintenance efforts and improve equipment reliability.
Safety and Compliance:
Follow all safety procedures, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to lockout/tagout protocols during maintenance activities. Ensure compliance with plant safety and environmental standards related to lubricant handling and disposal.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical certification or training in lubrication, mechanical maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Experience with lubrication techniques, maintenance in a manufacturing or industrial setting (experience in a stucco or board plant a plus).
- Knowledge of lubricant types, applications, and best practices for contamination control.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize and troubleshoot equipment wear or lubrication issues.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) is a plus.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems, including motors, gearboxes, and bearings.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry lubricants and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, or in environments with temperature variations typical of an industrial setting.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
The Lubrication Technician will work in an industrial manufacturing plant environment, often near heavy machinery and moving parts. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, and strict safety guidelines must be followed.
This role is key to ensuring smooth operations and maximizing the lifespan of equipment through proper lubrication practices.

Pay: $22.09 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 70 per week
