The Transportation Division is responsible for all aspects of the City’s street system which consists of approximately 136 miles of roadway and associated drainage structures, 20,000 traffic signs, 32 miles of sidewalk, as well as maintenance of the City’s fleet which consists of 270 vehicles from all city departments and associated functions.
Description of Work/Duties:
- Performing maintenance and repair on all types of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment; performing preventive maintenance on equipment and automobiles; ensuring safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
- Operates automotive diagnostic testing equipment in the diagnosis of mechanical problems.
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services light, medium and heavy-duty equipment including trucks of all sizes, dump trucks, back hoes, tractors, police sedans, light trucks and general vehicles.
- Performs preventive maintenance on automotive, construction and specialized equipment.
- Rebuilds pumps, cylinders and valves; overhauls and repairs carburetors and clutches; repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; overhauls, tunes and adjusts engines using specialized and standard test equipment.
- Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and replacing wiring; tests electronic ignition systems and makes necessary repairs.
- Designs and fabricates replacement parts and metal for body repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness of shop area, tools and equipment.
- Performs state safety inspections; performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, maintenance and specialized equipment, use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines and welding equipment; ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment, detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts, keep records of repairs and service operations and prepare reports, adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems, interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts, follow oral and written instructions accurately, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Minimum Training & Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience repairing automotive, construction and specialized equipment. Must obtain a NC Class “A” commercial driver's license and NC Safety and Emissions Inspection’s license within six months of employment. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.
Special Requirements: Must provide own general tools, to include a variety of tools to complete complex automotive mechanical work.
