Responsibilities: Restore, diagnose, repair, and overhaul engines, transmissions, and other components.
- Conduct safety inspections, test drives, and vehicle condition reports.
- Comply with state vehicle requirements and prepare vehicles for smog inspections.
- Routine Maintenance:
- Perform oil, fluid, and filter changes.
- Diagnose and repair any necessary parts.
- Report findings to the Auto Shop Manager and Collection Curator.
Shop Maintenance:
- Inventory and maintain mechanical equipment.
- Ensure shop equipment is operational and schedule repairs as needed.
Administrative Tasks:
Record all vehicle services and repairs.
- Document all work with pictures and reports.
- Evaluate service and parts options to contain costs.
Requirements
- 3-4 years of experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical automotive problems.
- High School diploma. Training in automotive mechanics is a plus
- Clean DMV record.
- Personal set of tools and equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly requires considerable use of arms, legs, and moving the whole body.
- Occasionally involves lifting heavy parts and tools, resulting in minor workplace injuries such as small cuts, sprains, and bruises, though generally not dangerous with proper safety procedures.
Work Environment
- Regularly works in a well-ventilated and well-lit car repair shop.
- Occasionally works with toxic substances, greasy parts, and tools, and may need to maintain uncomfortable positions.
- Noise level ranges from loud to very loud.
Compensation
- The hourly rate is between $35 and $40, depending on experience.
