Inspection Assistant, BAR Referee Program - $1,000 Sign on Bonus
100% In-Person at assigned BAR Referee location; Must reside in California
Since 2004 The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) has partnered with Foundation for California Community Colleges to administer the Smog Check Referee Program, which provides specialized Smog Check and other services to California community members. Referees perform functions and services as directed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), services that industry is not authorized to perform. The Assistant Inspector position is designed to strengthen and expand the skills of newer smog technicians and automotive students that have completed or soon to complete their courses and have obtained their smog check license. The Assistant Inspector performs lower-level emissions, OBD compliance and other specialized and abbreviated inspections, typically in high volume areas of the state. The position may also entail assisting Referee staff and management with other duties as assigned. Assistant Inspectors may be required to work alternative hours and days, at various established and remote locations using portable equipment. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with additional hours as needed to address the organization’s needs. This position is temporary with a 1-year maximum.
What You’ll Do
- Perform inspections and testing of vehicles for emissions and other compliance verification, and communicate inspection results and information to site Referee, vehicle owners and program management.
- Maintain a calm, helping, and professional demeanor when interacting with internal or external stakeholders.
- Perform at a high level of accuracy and consistency.
- Reply to or relay various technical questions from consumers.
- Maintain site or remote workspace and equipment. Maintain and promote a safe and incident free work environment; provide safety information to students and consumers and quickly respond to safety concerns.
- Maintain communication with site Referee, Region Manager, and other Referee Program staff by establishing and maintaining rapport with staff and students and attending meetings.
Attributes for Success
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of automobile repair and technology, including California state and local automotive repair policies and codes, and BAR smog check procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and system maintenance applications preferred.
- Strong initiative and ability to learn quickly.
- Strong problem-solving and follow-through skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business correspondence.
- Ability to switch rapidly among multiple ongoing tasks.
- Assistant Inspectors cannot be employed by or have any financial interest in a smog test or repair station while employed with FoundationCCC.
Education and Experience
- BAR EO Inspector license
- Some experience performing vehicle smog inspections preferred.
- Valid CA Driver’s License
- AS/AA degree in related field a plus
- Successful completion of the Referee Student Technician Training Program (STTP) a plus.
