The Mechanic 1 assists with maintaining all athletic department vehicles, tractors, utility vehicles, golf carts, mowing equipment, and small engine equipment, such as blowers, weed eaters, etc.
Driver’s License must be included on application.
95% Assists in the maintenance of all athletic department motorized equipment. Duties include preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter and radiator hose changes, and fluid level maintenance on the department motor pool and tractors. Incumbent will also have responsibility for repairing the motor pool and tractors. The repairs will consist of cleaning, replacing defective parts or reinstalling components such as fouled spark plugs, worn brake shoes, etc. When necessary, incumbent will assist with the overhaul of motors, pulling and repairing transmissions, grinding valves, and installing new piston rings; Responsible for repairs and maintenance of small engines such as lawnmowers, blowers, weed eaters, golf carts, etc.
5% Advances and supports LSU and Athletics Department initiatives through personal participation in educational and development opportunities, as well as participation in the creation of a transformational culture consistent with the values of LSU and its Athletics Department; Other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL OR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work extended days, weekends and holidays. Pre-employment drug screening, physical and motor vehicle record check required. Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University PS-67. In accordance with University PS-18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure. Must be able to lift 50 lbs., bend for extended periods, and bend or stoop in confined spaces.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
Must possess a valid Class "E" driver's license.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Trades Apprentice by the presence of independent performance of routine preventive maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment in a non-trainee capacity.
Differs from Mechanic 2 by the absence of independent responsibility on major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.

Performs entry level repair/maintenance and inspection related activities on vehicles and heavy construction equipment.

May also be responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as: lawnmowers, string trimmers, outboard motors, etc. Tasks may include spark plug replacement, carburetor cleaning, starter repair, and filter replacement.
Removes and cleans fuel tanks.
May maintain inventory of tools, instruments, and supplies.
