The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services, has a full-time vacancy for an Automotive Technician.
SUMMARY:
Performs skilled diagnostic and repair work on 300+ pieces of diverse NHDOT fleet equipment including passenger cars, trucks up to 1 ½ ton, hydraulic spreaders, message boards, crash attenuator trailers, and all related items in the Passenger Car Unit, Bureau of Mechanical Services, and ensures proper working condition, safe highway use, and prevention of costly repairs and downtime.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS : Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and possession of an Associate's degree in automotive mechanics from a recognized college or technical school.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience as an automotive technician in a large commercial or highway garage or automobile dealership repairing/servicing motor vehicles and related equipment, including light to medium duty trucks. Two additional years of approved work experience may be substituted for the Associate's degree.
License/Certification: Applicant must possess a valid operator's license as required for road testing the new or repaired equipment. The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. Must certify to perform State of NH Motor Vehicle Inspections within 30 days of hire. Within six months of employment must obtain Air Conditioning Certification to perform repairs on vehicle air conditioning equipment. Must possess certification from the US National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), or obtain such certification within one (1) year of employment. Must maintain ASE certification by renewing on a regular basis according to Institute requirements, to include at least one course related to automotive technology.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Shall provide own standard assortment of automotive mechanic tools thru 1" diameter and 1/2" drive. All accountabilities must be performed in accordance with State and Department rules and policies, including risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Diagnoses malfunctions in light fleet equipment (cars and pickup trucks up to 1 ½ tons) utilizing Windows based computer software and hardware, online technical manuals, and Internet Tech Support Programs, to include diagnosis of computer-controlled engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, ABS (anti-lock brake systems), traction control systems, tire pressure monitoring systems, air condition and climate control systems, and the SRS (supplemental restraint system, air bags); determines method of repair/modification, performs repair, and tests for proper operation.
Performs Annual Motor Vehicle Safety Inspections to certify vehicles conform to N. H. Department of Safety Regulations, to include testing emissions monitoring systems for vehicles 1996 and newer/8,500 pounds and under using a specialized computer system and electronic database.
Inspects for and performs preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles to minimize premature failure and to reduce costs and equipment downtime.
Overhauls, rebuilds and replaces various makes/models of internal combustion engines, (gasoline, diesel, and natural gas) automatic and standard shift transmissions, starters, alternators, transaxles, and differentials to minimize costly replacement of such components; to include working with electronics such as sensors that send information to the ECM (electronic control module) from the engine, transmission, and axles.
Maintains a safe working environment in the shop and individual work areas by keeping them clean, removing slipping and tripping hazards, and using safety equipment properly.
Assists with supervision and inspects work of apprentice, automotive servicemen and new mechanics to provide guidance and ensure repair work is in conformance with shop standards.
Performs emergency road repairs on equipment in all weather conditions as assigned, to include traveling to the location of the unit to make the repair, or assisting to prepare the unit to be hauled back to the shop.
Completes vehicle life history documentation and forwards to the shop foreman for entry into computer based fleet management system.
Services and repairs shop equipment to ensure safety and efficiency of operation.
