DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision to requisition, receive, store, issue, control, and maintain automotive parts, supplies, accessories and related equipment; to identify and select items for issue as requested by mechanics, auto service personnel and other user departments; to inspect parts and tools to ensure correctness and quality; and to perform related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
Auto Parts Technicians are responsible for the procurement, storage, issuance and control of automotive equipment, parts and accessories. Positions in this class are assigned to the Public Works Agency and the Motor Vehicle Department of the General Services Agency and function under the general supervision of the Senior Auto Parts Technician.
Auto Parts Technicians differ from Supply Clerks in that the incumbents in the former class are required to possess specialized skill and detailed knowledge in handling a variety of automotive parts, assemblies and special tools, which involves more than a working knowledge of supply and storekeeping techniques. Incumbents in this class must have knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance procedures utilized in the operations of the Motor Vehicle Department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Orders, receives and maintains automotive parts, accessories, supplies and special tools to be used in the maintenance, service and repair of the County’s automotive equipment.
2. Issues and distributes parts and supplies to garage, shops and other County facilities as needed; determines availability of parts and estimates delivery time.
3. Receives and fills requisitions for specialized orders; maintains and utilizes ongoing monthly listings of Garage/Stores Purchase Orders; and arranges and coordinates pick-up and delivery of orders.
4. Maintains continuous contact with inventory suppliers and vendors; researches and locates resources for non-standard parts and special tools; and determines the appropriateness and/or feasibility of substituting parts on the basis of knowledge of interchangeability of such parts.
5. Identifies and selects parts and tools as described and requested by auto service personnel, mechanics and other departments; rechecks request lists to ensure completeness and accuracy of items being ordered.
6. Inspects parts, supplies and equipment for quality, quantity and correctness; verifies and checks items received against parts catalogs and manufacturer's identification, model or parts number.
7. Requests requisition numbers from Central Stores for special parts ordered from outside vendors that are not on regular monthly Purchase Orders; upon receipt of these special parts, enters necessary information and identification on appropriate documents; and completes the Job Order.
8. Notes appropriate levels of automotive parts and supplies in stock, and avoids overstocking of frequently used or uncontrolled items; also determines, schedules and arranges delivery, location and layout of stock in storage areas.
9. Keeps abreast of new parts and product lines within the automotive parts and equipment industry; researches and negotiates costs; and provides or passes on related information to Auto Service personnel, mechanics and supervisors.
10. Performs inventory control; checks and reconciles records with appropriate inventory listings and records; and reports discrepancies to the supervisor.
11. Utilizes parts catalogs and repair manuals, and tracking system for parts maintenance and control; also maintains operating records and files.
12. Completes, prepares and maintains routine forms, documents and reports; researches and surveys local vendors and suppliers; prepares brief statistical summaries and reports; may act in a lead capacity over other storeroom staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I
The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Supply Clerk II or an equivalent or higher level class in the Alameda classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)
Or II
The equivalent of recent work experience involving the purchasing, receiving, storing, issuing and maintaining of automotive parts, accessories and supplies
Or
The equivalent of three years of recent work experience in the maintenance, service and repair of fleet vehicles and construction equipment, which also involved requesting or ordering related automotive parts, accessories and special tools.
License:
Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver's license. Candidate must submit evidence from DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.
