Automotive Mechanic B is a journey level position in East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Fleet Maintenance section. This position will perform the maintenance, repair and overhaul of automobiles, light trucks and similar vehicles. In addition, this position may repair and overhaul medium and heavy trucks.
As a condition of employment, new hires must, within six months, obtain an unrestricted Class B California driver’s license with endorsements for hazardous materials and tankers and must successfully complete approved training and testing in airbrake maintenance and repair. Failure to meet these requirements may result in termination of employment.
Examples of Duties:
- Performs major repairs and overhauls to engines; inspects and replaces broken or worn parts
such as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, fittings, wrist pins, and gaskets.
- Repairs, cleans, adjusts, and installs all fuel, ignition, electrical, and cooling systems; repairs
and replaces parts such as fuel injectors, carburetors, fuel pumps, starter motors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, wiring, switches, batteries, radiators, thermostats, water pumps, and computerized and related equipment.
- Repairs and overhauls power transmission system parts such as clutches, automatic and
standard transmissions, differential units, gears, bearings, universal joints, and hydraulic units.
- Repairs and adjusts steering mechanisms and other controls, checking and aligning wheels.
- Reads and makes adjustments on computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Performs light machine work such as lathe and valve grinding, honing, and reaming.
- Repairs vehicle body and chassis parts; uses hand and power tools, uses electric arc and
acetylene welding equipment.
- Operates a tow truck; tows disabled vehicles or makes roadside repairs when necessary.
- Performs preventive maintenance work to automobiles and light trucks.
- Performs preventive maintenance and major repair to medium and heavy trucks as assigned.
- Makes oral and written reports of work performed; completes forms and keeps accurate
maintenance records.
- May diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle air conditioning equipment.
- Prepares new vehicles for EBMUD service by adding accessories and prepares old vehicles for
disposal by removing accessories.
- May modify and fabricate new parts for light truck bodies and similar equipment; may install
- and repair power take-off equipment such as small electric cranes, hoists, and hydraulic lift equipment.
- May estimate labor and parts required to perform special vehicle repair work.
- May direct and instruct a subjourney level employee in the work; ensures that proper safety precautions are observed.
The ideal candidate will be:
- knowledgeable in current automotive and truck repair methods, techniques, tools and equipment.
- proficient in the testing, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of automotive engines, transmissions, body and chassis parts, electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, steering, brake, exhaust, air conditioning and suspension systems.
- skilled in using computerized diagnostic equipment.
- skilled in electric arc, MIG and acetylene welding and cutting equipment and in light machine work.
- able to read, interpret and work from complex schematics, specifications, mechanical drawings and shop manuals.
- able to make material and labor estimates and maintain computerized records.
- safety conscious and ready to observe required safety practices and precautions.
- able to communicate clearly and maintain effective working relationships.
The salary range is $9,203 per month increasing to $9,663, $10,146 and $10,653 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

2. Attainment of recognized journey level status as a general automotive mechanic.
3. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
4. Within the first six months of appointment to the class, must obtain a valid unrestricted Class B California driver’s license with endorsement for hazardous materials and tankers and successfully complete approved training and testing for airbrake maintenance and repair.
5. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including physical agility to work in tight or confined spaces and sufficient strength to lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
6. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

6. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
