Mechanic
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, makes mechanical repairs to district’s vehicle and bus fleet while providing support in the daily requirements of the transportation department. Helps provide safe and reliable vehicles to transport students and employees.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Performs preventative maintenance on district's vehicles
Diagnoses and repairs problems, and performs preventative maintenance on district motor vehicle fleet and buses
Submits to substance abuse and alcohol testing as prescribed by school district policy
Interprets work orders, plans appropriate work process, makes repairs, road tests vehicle, and completes work order based on time, work required, and parts
Maintains high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work areas
Complies with all shop standards in conformance with state, federal, and insurance regulations
Performs job in a safe, economical, and efficient manner
Maintains a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, parents, and school personnel, always promoting district goodwill
Maintains a presentable appearance that includes being properly dressed according to district standards, neat grooming, and good hygiene
Performs road-side maintenance calls and recovery operations as necessary
Responsible for inventories of assigned equipment and tools and the cleanliness of tools, work area, and shop
Drives bus routes as needed
Complies with the use of devices and software designed for the safety of drivers and passengers

Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Expertise in the area of vehicle repair and maintenance
Skill in use of tools and machines needed for vehicle maintenance
Hand tools, electric and non-electric; floor jacks; hydraulic jacks; tire spreader; hydraulic lift; large and small shop equipment; school buses
Oral and written communication skills

Operation of a computer and assigned software

Operate computer(s)/device(s) including, but not limited to, tablets, phones, and radios

Education/Licenses/Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Current Class A or B commercial driver's license with proper endorsements P and S or willing to obtain when hired. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred. TASBT Certification preferred. Minimum of three years mechanical experience in vehicle repair including diesel engines. Must submit to substance abuse and alcohol testing as prescribed by school district policy.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Lifting/carrying – 15-44 pounds; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping/crouching/kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; speaking clearly; occasional district-wide, state-wide travel; work occasional irregular hours and prolonged hours.
