License and Certification Qualifications: Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. School Passenger and School (P&S) Bus required within six months of hire. Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for School Bus and T8 Truck Preventive Maintenance and Inspections required within twelve months of hire.
Education Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Automotive/diesel service technician training at an accredited technical school preferred.
Experience Qualifications: Ten years as automotive/truck mechanic with three years as supervisor required. Extensive school bus or truck inspection experience preferred.
Skills Qualifications: Ability to follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately; knowledge of motor vehicle parts, materials, maintenance tools, hazards, and safety procedures; ability to supervise; ability to research and apply information in technical manuals instructions and diagrams; ability to perform and supervise repairs to automotive/truck equipment operated by electrical, gasoline, and diesel engines; ability to manage inspection and service program for large vehicle fleet; and ability to use computers, vehicle maintenance software, diagnostic software, and computerized test equipment.
Primary Responsibilities: Responsible for accurately diagnosing mechanical malfunctions and supervising all facets of preventive maintenance and repairs on all systems for the department of Transportation and Fleet Maintenance.
1. Supervise subordinates in the conduct of preventive and corrective maintenance.
a. Analyze mechanical malfunctions for all fleet vehicles.
b. Ensure all bus/vehicles are properly maintained mechanically and in a safe operating condition.
c. Ensure all mechanical repairs are performed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
d. Keep track of work performed and supplies/repair parts used according to established procedures.
e. Supervise, maintain, and assign spare buses as directed.
f. Ensure that the service truck assigned is properly maintained and stocked with repair parts, hand tools, and special tools.
2. Assume responsibility for materials/repair parts issued for work on fleet vehicles.
a. Maintain and account for all special tools, parts, and equipment issued.
b. Ensure ready access to all tools, parts, and equipment issued.
3. Research technical manuals, parts catalog, and vehicle diagrams.
a. Diagnose mechanical problems on manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, drive lines, braking systems, power take-off units, gasoline, and diesel engines.
b. Assist subordinates in the proper interpretation of technical instructions.
4. Issue school buses as needed.
a. Receive issue documents via e-mail, ensure buses are mechanically safe for issue, and assist bus managers in bus familiarization.
5. Ensure shop safety for the department of Transportation and Fleet Maintenance.
a. Apply applicable hazardous material safeguards and ensure tools and shop equipment are safe and available.
b. Enforce shop safety standards and take corrective action when required.
6. Perform on-site vehicle repair for the department of Transportation and Fleet Maintenance.
a. Receive instructions from dispatcher, locate vehicle at roadside location, and perform necessary repairs to ensure the vehicle is moving.
7. Cooperate with and maintain a positive working relationship with all other school system personnel.
a. Maintain open communications with customers to assist in determining maintenance requirements and explaining maintenance services and repairs to vehicles.
b. Maintain a positive working relationship with other GCPS employees to promote teamwork and mutual support.
8. Be available to work assigned shift as directed.
a. Work night shift work hours as directed.
b Respond to work requirements any time on any day of the week when assigned to on-call duty.
c Be on call for necessary work 24-hours per day, 7 days per week.
9. Assist in the training of junior fleet technicians.
a. Conduct and/or assist in technical training of less experienced technicians.
b. Mentor and assist technicians with obtaining and maintaining required ASE certifications.
10. Obtain and maintain the required ASE certifications and CDL with P&S endorsements.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is also required to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
