Under the direction of the Heavy Equipment Supervisor, serve as lube technician of department’s inventoried diverse fleet of over 150 pieces of equipment and various farming equipment for ag services departments. Record daily activity information for recharge purposes and preventative maintenance for department owned fleet.

Minimum Qualifications

- Valid Class B Driver’s License and Medical Certificate.
- Experience working in an automotive or heavy equipment repair facility.
- Experience working with the public in a customer service environment. Communication skills to read, understand and apply policies and procedures as well as to convey clear and concise information to the public and staff.
- Experience working independently to identify issues, initiate repairs, and perform routine cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Experience with and/or the ability to use, or learn in a short time, computers, and e-mail.
- Knowledge of Commercial truck regulations, certifications, and inspections, knowledge to detect safety deficiencies of vehicles and heavy equipment and farm equipment, and knowledge of safety items required in special classes of vehicles. Skill to operate and drive motor vehicles including heavy equipment and farm equipment.
- Knowledge of proper fluids for each unit and knowledge of methods connected with safely handling of fuel and oil. Skill to perform basic math required to perform maintenance, measure fluids, etc. Skill to perform minor vehicle preparation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of tire and tube repair, tire mounting, and tire balancing as well as the safety procedures involved in each task.

- Organizational skills to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort appropriately among the projects, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
- Flexibility to adapt to new and changing procedures while maintaining productivity and accomplishing workload as priorities change.

Department Overview
Transportation Services facilitates the access and mobility needs of the campus community through the coordination of efforts among Transportation Services’ units and with other campus departments and non-university entities and ensures that services are provided in a professional, efficient, and service-oriented manner. Additionally, the department plays an integral role in operating and maintaining the agricultural equipment used on campus.
The Heavy Equipment Repair Shop provides operation of the campus heavy equipment fleet in support of general construction, transportation, material handling, ag service, animal care, underground utilities, academic/field research and the Public Garden. The equipment shop repairs and maintains the equipment for use and daily rental by campus departments in addition to repairing campus department owned equipment.

Physical Demands
- Daily duties require walking, lifting to 70 lbs, stooping, pushing, and bending.
- Operate vehicles, tractors, mowers, excavators, large trucks, carts for long periods for business and operational need.
- On a regular basis, lift, carry or maneuver various materials or equipment weighing up to 70 lbs. (concrete bags, signposts, aluminum panels, etc.)
- Frequently climb ladders/stairs or use lift equipment to a height of 30 feet.
- Crawl, stand, bend, stoop, and/or walk for extended periods to perform tasks.
- Frequently use hands and fingers to grasp, squeeze, handle, and hold items/tools for long periods.
- Operate jack hammer, pole installer, asphalt grinder, pressure washer, and other equipment on an occasional basis.
- Work area can be noisy, dusty, cold, hot, wet, smelly and/or in confined or restricted areas.
Work Environment
- Work performed year-round outdoors in extreme weather conditions in an institutional setting.
- Possess and maintain a valid California Class B Driver’s License and maintain participation in the CA DMV Pull Notice System.
- Must have or obtain a Forklift Safety certificate within 6 months of employment. Requires the use of protective equipment such as safety glasses, ear protection, protective clothing, gloves, etc.
- Must participate in medical monitoring programs, medical surveillance, and physical examinations. Must receive proper training from department safety officer in Injury Illness Protection Program, Workers Protection Standards, work occasional overtime or weekends as needed to complete unforeseen responsibilities to meet deadlines and keep priority deadlines in check. Work in all types of weather conditions. Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB’s radioactive materials, industrial & laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials & wastes, biological hazards & other materials labeled hazardous.
- This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant.
- Required to wear protective clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection. Infrequently, may work with or be in areas where hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position may, include fuel, solvents, and petroleum distillates; mercury containing fluorescent light tubes, etc.
- Incumbent may work additional hours beyond the standard workweek during peak times, special events or to cover shifts.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of Alcohol Testing Program; employee will be placed on the random testing pool list for drug and alcohol testing.
