Purpose
Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repair work on automotive and related equipment, trucks, construction equipment, and other special equipment.
Nature and Scope
This is the journey-level classification in the Vehicle Mechanic series. The work is distinguished from that of the Senior Vehicle Mechanic in that incumbents in the Vehicle Mechanic class do not overhaul or perform major repairs of hydraulic equipment, transmissions, or engines with power-take-off apparatus or other integral directly-driven accessory equipment.
The next lower class of Vehicle Attendant services vehicles and performs other minor repair and maintenance functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Overhauls gasoline and diesel engines and equipment.
- Inspects and tests operating and accessory systems of vehicles and off-road equipment to determine the need for repair.
- Adjusts, tunes and repairs gasoline, diesel and flex fueled engines; repairs, adjusts, and replaces components of standard and electronic ignition systems.
- Tests and repairs wiring, gauges, lights, fuel injection systems, anti-lock brake systems, and heating and air conditioning systems.
- Tests, replaces, or rebuilds alternators, starters, and other electrical components; replaces seals and gaskets. Repairs, adjusts, and rebuilds steering, brake, and suspension components;
aligns front end; tests, replaces, and repairs smog control systems.
Adjusts, repairs, and replaces clutches; tests hydraulic systems; fabricates and / or replaces hydraulic hoses, fittings, and seals;
repairs and replaces hydraulic components.
- Tests, repairs, and replaces air and hydraulic valves and controls; replaces axle bearings and seals; checks and overhauls differential assemblies.
- Checks, repairs, or overhauls four wheel drive assemblies; tests and repairs grounds maintenance equipment; adjusts and repairs brush chippers.
- Operates precision diagnostic and repair equipment; makes repairs in the field; and writes reports of work completed.

Required Experience Qualifications
Designation as a journey-level vehicle mechanic, by either completion of an apprentice vehicle mechanic program equivalent to SMUDs;
or by previous journey level experience as a vehicle mechanic repairing and maintaining automobiles, trucks and special equipment.
Knowledge Of
Standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and overhaul of gas and diesel engines, vehicle components and related equipment;
basic hydraulics; and safe working procedures.
Skills To
Correctly and in a timely manner diagnose and repair automotive and related equipment, operate tools and equipment used in the performance of the work;
understand and follow oral and written instructions; and work in a safe manner.
Desirable Qualifications
- ASE Certifications
- At least four (4+) years of recent (within the last 6 years) vehicle mechanic experience
Required Licenses / Certificates
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).
A Class A driver's license will berequired (and in addition, the position may require a hazardous materials and tanker endorsements) within six (6) months of hire.
Candidates appointed to positions requiring the possession / retention of a Class A driver's license must pass an initial drug and alcohol screen and DOT medicalexam.
Selected candidates will also be required tosubmit to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
