Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Mechanic to join our team. As a Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing various bus and automotive repair and maintenance tasks. Part-time and full-time position.
Perform routine and minor repairs and preventative maintenace on MTA buses and automotive equipment. This includes removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary, while using tools and equipment in a safe and professional manner. Provide varied support to the Operation Department.
Essential Duties:
- Operate vehicles while in strict compliance with MTA policies, directives, and procedures, and all Federal and West Virginia traffic laws and regulations.
- Perform routine maintenance and general repairs on transit equipment and support vehicles, primarily focusing on tire replacement, brakes, A/C, minor repairs and adjustments, replacement of body panels, and seasonal equipment switchovers.
- Conduct accurate and professional State of Good Repair inspections. Performs regular preventive maintenance on buses and automotive equipment following established procedures and policies which includes MTA required as well as Department of Transportation and Division of Public Transit inspections.
- Troubleshoot vehicle systems on a limited basis, accurately identifying causes of maintenance problems. Recommends and performs subsequent repairs.
- Assist in the maintenance of vehicles utilizing alternative propulsion technologies and fuels including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies in the future.
- Ensure proper vehicle assignments are made while veicle needs are being met.
- Respond to road calls and participate in snow removal as needed.
- Accurately and professionally document all actions taken in written and electronic format. Complete all necessary forms (e.g., repair work orders, purchase orders, warranty tags, etc.).
- Seasonally inspect vehicles as schedules, identifying defects and making repairs as needed.
- May assist in providing limited training and direction to other mechanics when hired.
- Actively and continuously improve professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in routine training sessions and educational seminars relevant to position and job duties.
- Meet attendance/participation standards for routine safety meetings and training sessions.
- Must always clean and keep floors and working environment neat and free of debris.
- Must wash and clean all support vehicles weekly.
- Must maintain administrative, grounds and maintenance building by performing repairs, sweeping floors and offices, daily removal of trash, cleaning windows as needed, and all other areas as needed or assigned by management.
- Must use the Preventive Maintenance whiteboard to track all PM services. Must maintain complete files on all repairs and preventive maintenance on all vehicles and facilities.
- Must follow all OEM schedules related to repairs and preventive maintenance on all equipment and rolling stock.
- Must be able to life at least 50 lbs, use all protective equipment as needed.
- Service all equipment per the OEM Manuals and schedules. Must track all service performed and logged in filed and electronically.
- Must perform all other duties as assigned by management.
- Must track mileage on all vehicles at least twice weekly and update the master whiteboard in EXCEL.
- Must perform market research on all repairs and maintenance as stated in all procurement requirements.
- Serve as a backup driver as needed.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to all FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements.
- Must understand and adhere to departmental, organizational, and industry safety standards and practices. Safely operates vehicles and equipment. Proactively maintains a safe working environment regarding all job duties. Routinely attends and participates in safety training, meetins, and inspections.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Adhere to and actively works towards personal, department, and organizational goals and performance standards - detailed performance indictators are discssed in detail in a separate departmental document.
- Advanced computer skills and data entry ability.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and abide by department code of conduct.
- Solid knowledge of electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions. Solid knowledge of operating theory, failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive mainteance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles.
- Solid skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Solid knowledge of OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
- Solid ability to use prudent judgment and problem-solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations.
- Solid ability to read, understand, and use maintenance, repair and parts manuals, computer-based maintenance information systems, Federal Safety Regulations, service updates and troubleshooting guides.
- Abilit to communicate effectively in English.
- Basic knowledge of electrical and gas welding.
- Must be able to obtain state inspection licenses within 90 days of employment.
- Must complete ASE certifcations as needed.
- Must have own tools to perform job functions.
Qualifications:
- Education: High School or equivalent knowledge to perform job successfully
- Ability to read, write, and speak English
- Training and certification necessary to be able to perform role responsibility.
- Vocational/Technical degree in related field (diesel, automotive, etc.)
- Licenses and Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Class C CDL with Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain to within 60 days after being hired.
- Must have current State of West Virginia inspection certification to inspect all fleet type vehicles or the ability to obtain within 90 days after being hired.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
