About The Position
The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of
Engineering Technician I/II (Inspection Services). Engineering Technicians typically perform technical duties in one or more three service areas: Drafting, Design and Support Services; Construction Inspections Services; and/or, Permitting Services. The current opening will focus primarily on Inspection Services for encroachment permits and capital improvement projects, in the Engineering and Transportation Department.
Candidates may be selected at either the Engineering Technician I or II level, based on their demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability.
The Engineering Technician I position is the entry level position of the classification series. Incumbents at this level will be reasonably expected to progress to the Engineering Technician II level with experience and satisfactory job performance.
Engineering Technician II is the intermediate level position of the classification series. Incumbents at this level will be given assignments with a higher degree of complexity and will progressively be expected to perform their work with greater independence.
Typical Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Review construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and other project-related documents.
- Ensure field compliance with city and government regulations, contract plans, and specifications.
- Conduct on-site inspections of construction materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, safety precautions, concrete structures, streetlights, traffic signals, traffic control devices, stormwater infiltration and treatment systems, and erosion control measures.
- Perform field measurements and coordinate materials testing.
- Monitor project progress, identify deficiencies, and recommend necessary field adjustments.
- Investigate citizen complaints related to encroachments or grading violations.
- Provide excellent customer service by delivering accurate information on engineering services, codes, regulations, policies, and fees.
- Provide excellent customer service to all individuals by being attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous, respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
- Effectively communicate with contractors, developers, and permit holders via phone, email, and in-person interactions.
- Participate in meetings to discuss construction details and resolve issues with contractors and other agencies.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and review stormwater compliance.
- Identify and recommend approval of necessary contract and plan modifications to accommodate field conditions.
- Calculate and recommend progress payments for completed work.
- Attend staff meetings regarding public works and utility matters.
- Assist in the coordination of office and field engineering tasks with other City departments and outside agencies.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
