This is a skilled position involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered equipment for the City of Hyattsville Department of Public Works. The candidate selected will be placed at the appropriate level based on experience.

Nature of the work:

The Mechanic II works in the Fleet Maintenance Division performs various skilled work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-engine-powered equipment. The work ranges from minor repairs to overhaul equipment, including mowers, saws, passenger cars, trucks, tractors, loaders, compressors, pumps, and other heavy construction equipment. The work includes assisting employees with the work assigned through instruction, demonstration, and monitoring of progress and methods as directed by the Manager of Fleet Operations or Superintendent of DPW Operations. Essential Duties by Level of Position.

Essential Duties:

Mechanic II works independently to examine equipment for mechanical and electrical defects and determine the nature and extent of needed repairs by visual inspection, road testing, and diagnostic equipment; repair automotive equipment by adjusting, rebuilding, welding, or replacing broken, worn, or damaged, mechanical and electrical parts; inspect ignition components, transmissions, differentials, steering assemblies, water, and oil pumps and axles; adjust and repair inoperative vehicles in the field when possible; requisition supplies, tools, and materials; test equipment for adequacy of repairs.

Maintains and secures work tools as necessary and maintains a clean and safe work area.
Aids others engaged in such work; demonstrates proper work methods; provides wiring diagrams, flow charts, and troubleshooting material. Oversees fleet repair from outside vendors and verifies proper repairs.
Provides a weekly report to their supervisor on fleet status and needs. Continues education to keep up with automotive and equipment technology. Performs other duties as assigned.
Must be available to work daily and occasionally to work weekends and when emergencies require.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Considerable knowledge of the maintenance, preventative maintenance schedules, and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and equipment
thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, original equipment, and manufacturers' recommendations, methods, and practices used in the automotive trade
considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices
skilled in the operation of mechanical equipment, machine tools, welding apparatus, and hand tools standard to the trade
ability to effectively carry out verbal and written instructions and to discuss their report of equipment malfunctions with equipment operators

Physical demands and working environment: The work requires operating potentially hazardous tools and equipment, working around trucks and hydraulics, working in inclement weather, exposure to strong odors and fumes, and walking, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 100 pounds. Manual dexterity is required when working on equipment and with computer input. The worker must be able to work over, under, and around equipment as required.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
Minimum of 2 years experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered equipment for the Mechanic I level. For the Mechanic II position, the requirement is five years of relevant experience.
Ability to maintain a harmonious, courteous, and effective working relationship with supervisors, customers, fellow mechanics, and the public.
Must possess skill and experience in using diagnostic equipment, personal computers, inventory control, and preventative maintenance systems as directed.
Experience in training and/or directing the work of others is desired for the Mechanic II position.
Must be able to work over, under, and around all vehicles and equipment in the city. Licenses and Certifications
A.S.E current certification and/or manufacturer certification preferred
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
A valid Commercial Driver's License must always be maintained, along with a safe driving record.
