ABOUT THE POSITION

There is currently one (1) fulltime Mechanic (75 bi-weekly hours) vacancy within the Fleet Division of the Department of Public Works. This position is responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems and performing mechanical repairs of approximately 700 gasoline, hybrid, diesel, light truck, and emergency vehicles that are in the county fleet . Emergency repairs and maintenance may need to take place in the field at any time

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity, is highly organized, possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approaches their work with enthusiasm, demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service and is a team player. The ideal candidate must be able to perform journey level work in all aspects of automotive repair including maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles (including hybrids), light truck and small engine repairs. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in OBD II, ABS, CAN-Bus multi-plexing, SRS systems, Hybrid technology and HVAC systems using modern technology to diagnose problems. Possession of ASE Automotive/Light Truck certification(s) obtained from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence is highly desired. In addition, the ideal candidate uses sound independent judgment, is capable of working outdoors in any weather conditions and can work evenings, nights, and weekends in case of emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF

Equipment, tools, methods, and techniques of troubleshooting, overhauling, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles.
Hybrid technology.
Components used in computer-controlled vehicles.
Methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the installation, repair, or replacement of special equipment.
Parts used in major repair of vehicles.
Modern technology, computer applications, systems and software related to the work.
Equipment, tools, methods, and techniques of repairing components.

ABILITY TO

Diagnose mechanical defects and determine appropriate maintenance and/or repair work needed.
Effectively and efficiently repair equipment with minimal direction.
Drive fleet and other vehicles for road tests and for diagnostic purposes.
Drive to location of disabled vehicles requiring repair.
Follow oral and written instructions, keep simple records, effectively deal with dealer representatives.
Prepare and maintain maintenance and repair orders.
Employ safe work practices while keeping the area clean and orderly.
Maintain effective work relationships and work in a standard shop setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities listed below. Typically, three years of experience as a journey level mechanic or Senior Equipment Services Worker with the County of Marin or the equivalent OR the completion of a two-year program and one year of experience as a journey level mechanic.

Certificates and Licenses:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required at time of appointment.
Possession of ASE Automobile/Light Truck Certification obtained from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence is highly desirable.
Must obtain California Smog Check certificate within one year from date of hire.
