The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for safely maintaining all the rolling stock on the facility. The Mechanic is a skilled tradesman who installs, dismantles, repairs, reassembles and moves industrial machinery and mechanical equipment for the facility. This individual uses a stong knowledge of equipment capabilities, as well as an understanding of blueprints and technical instructions, to update and repair the rolling stock on site. This individual demonstrates leadership to carefully take apart, categorize and move old equipment, analyze plans for new equipment, map out space and unpack and assemple new equipment as well as help to determine useful life of rolling stock.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities, Expectations and Performance Measures What measures or metrics will the individual be measured on and what level of performance is required?Other duties may be assigned.
- Operate hoisting and lifting devices, such as cranes, jacks and tractors, to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery.
- Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and find irregularities and malfunctions.
- Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts.
- Perform maintenance of facility rolling stock; loaders, fork lifts, swing machines, etc.
- Lubricate moving parts of machine or mechanical equipment
- Inspects moving parts of log yard equipment to detect wear and determine need for lubrication
- Greases bearings and friction surfaces, pours oil on chains and sprockets, and maintains reservoir levels
- Maintains inventory of lubricants
- Performs all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations
- Reports defective or malfunctioning machinery to supervisor
- Fills oil cans and grease gun with specified lubricants
- Records and maintains production, repair, and machine and equipment maintenance information
- Other duties as assigned.

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise levels are moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Lifting and physical activity is required for this position, must be able to move boards and wood pieces. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
