Thompson & Johnson Equipment is seeking a skilled and dedicated Battery Technician to join our growing team in the Schenectady area.
Thompson & Johnson Equipment is a growing, third-generation family-owned Material Handling Equipment dealership with locations in Syracuse, Schenectady, Binghamton and Horseheads.
This role requires flexibility to travel to customer sites in a work van or work within our shop to maintain, inspect, diagnose, install, repair, clean, and replace various types of industrial batteries and chargers used in material handling equipment. The ideal candidate will ensure all services meet customer, business, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnostics & Repairs: Perform diagnostics and repairs on a variety of batteries using ferro-resonant, SCR, and high-frequency technology chargers. Tasks include cell replacements, cable repairs, connector and contact tip replacements on customer and rental equipment.
- Planned Maintenance: Execute planned maintenance agreements, including battery inspections, watering, washing, and recording cell voltages and specific gravities. Conduct charger inspections and perform necessary calibrations and adjustments.
- Installation: Install and assist in the installation of batteries, chargers, stands, battery handling systems, multi-level racking systems, man-on-board changers, monitoring systems, and watering systems.
- Equipment Evaluation: Evaluate and maintain battery handling equipment and accessories such as battery changers, wash cabinets, watering systems, electronic rotation systems, and monitoring systems.
- Documentation: Complete and maintain accurate records for service orders, PM worksheets, time cards, and other required documentation. Ensure compliance with warranty programs, OSHA, DOT, Hazmat regulations, and other safety and environmental rules.
- Workspace Maintenance: Maintain a clean and orderly work space in accordance with departmental procedures and company safety regulations. Take ownership of company assets including vehicles, inventory, tools, and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in safely operating power tools, lifts, hoists, hydraulic jacks, and material handling equipment.
- Capable of learning and using an oxygen/acetylene torch safely and effectively.
- Skilled in handling energized equipment (cells, batteries, and chargers) safely.
- Competent in understanding service and training manuals, interpreting schematics, using diagnostic instruments, and performing maintenance and repairs accurately, efficiently, and safely.
- Able to work independently with effective organizational and time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare routine paperwork.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to understand and follow directions, safety rules, and standard operating procedures.
- Willingness to travel by ground and occasionally by air.
- Consistently maintain reliable and predictable attendance.
Qualification Standards:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- AAS Degree or Technical School preferred.
- Experience and Skills:
- Basic understanding of AC and DC circuits.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Desired: Technical training, general maintenance, mechanical, or electrical experience.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Licensing, Certification, and/or Training Requirements:
- Must possess a valid NYS Driver License free of major infractions at the time of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
- Must complete and maintain current Company forklift certification.
